She's a doll isn't she? My model, Courtney, has been one of my best friends since grade school. So when she asked me if I could make her "one of those big white puffy skirts", of course I said yes! Originally it was supposed to be her Christmas gift, but because it was also a school assignment, I had to wait for my teacher to grade it, so it ended up being more like a New Years gift.
This drafted circle skirt is made out of tulle and taffeta with six french seams, three on each side, one for each layer of tulle! I wanted to achieve the maximum amount of poofiness with the least amount of fabric so I used taffeta to help keep the fullness underneath. At the time, both Courtney and myself were too busy to get together for me to take her measurements, so I literally just guessed, and it actually ended up fitting her perfectly! I would have preferred to shoot this look outdoors, but being wintertime in Chicago, there was no way I was going to make her suffer through the cold. So what you're looking at is literally the only available ten square feet of space I could find in my tiny sewing studio, with a mattress and table cloth for a backdrop... I think we did okay, considering our limitations! It was definitely a lot of fun, and the experience has helped me get more creative about shooting in my studio in the future.
